Former mill spanned with Howarth's engineered roof trusses

Howarth Timber Engineering, the specialist division of the Howarth Timber Group, has just completed a contract to manufacture and deliver to site around 90 bespoke timber trusses, each 16.7m metres long, to span the roof void of a refurbished mill, now converted into 30 high quality apartments.
The building, known as The Spinning House, is widely regarded as one of Batley’s finest former textile houses, and has been sympathetically converted into desirable accommodation by specialist homebuilders Binks Vertical. Howarth Timber Engineering was appointed to design and manufacture the roof trusses, bracing and associated metalwork based on Howarth’s successful track record in major projects.
The inner shell of the 19th century building presented many challenges to the design of the roof trusses. Several existing structural steel beams had to be accommodated in the fit, along with an irregular layout of internal walls. Furthermore, the roof space was designed to accommodate two attic apartments and a hallway in each truss.
Specialist vehicles were hired to transport the trusses to site, which is located in a built-up and highly populated area of the West Yorkshire town.
