JASON AND STUART HIT THE HEIGHTS IN VIETNAM
2 November 2011
Two Howarth Timber colleagues have just scaled the heights of Vietnam’s tallest mountain and, in the process, have raised more than £7,000 for our charity ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’.
Howarth’s North West regional manager Jason Rothwell and plumbing and heating manager Stuart Badley, who’s based at our Rochdale branch, each climbed 3,143 metres to the top of Mount Fansipan in the north of the country. It’s an achievement classed as more technically difficult than conquering Everest’s base camp or topping Kilimanjaro, and it took its toll on the exploring duo.
“The conditions were extreme and the weather was hot and muggy, which made it all very difficult,” said Stuart. “It was physically very demanding.”
But having hit the heights, their task was not complete. Stuart and Jason then took part in project work at an orphanage in Ba Vi, helping clean and paint four rooms. They also played games with the children and donated toys.“It was an extremely emotional experience – rewarding, but quite tough,” added Stuart.
Previously, Jason has raised money for our charity by walking the Great Wall of China, and Stuart’s fundraising is far from over, too. “I have just signed up to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats next year, so after a week’s rest it’s back to the rigorous training regime!
Whilst the climb is complete, you can still make your donation to the Mount Fansipan project, the proceeds of which all then goes to When You Wish Upon a Star. Please visit www.justgiving.com/howarth-timber
