26/10/2004
Six employees from Howarth Timber this year have completed the Timber Industries recognised qualification, the Institute of Wood Science Certification Course, whilst Peter Kelly, Howarth Timber’s Training Manager, has received his CIPD Post Graduate certificate.
The IWSc certificate is a recognised qualification in timber technology & utilisation and will be beneficial to all the students in their present jobs and their future prospects. The course aims to give a broad understanding of the technology of wood and an introduction to some of the commercial aspects.
After 18 months of formal training days and informal tutorial sessions, completion of their modules and project workbooks finally culminated in a 3 hour national examination. Two of the students Keith McDonough and Mark Turner who both work for the Blackburn branch of Howarth Timber & Building Supplies achieved ‘Distinctions’, Mark Pearson achieved a ‘Credit’, Catherine Creasey, and Claire Anderson received ‘Passes’ and all work for the Internal Sales department of Howarth (Timber Importers) Ltd, whilst Kurt Coupland who works for Arbordeck also received a ‘Pass’. Additionally Kurt was short listed as one of the six ‘national’ finalists in this years TTJ Trainee of the Year Awards.
The results, that the students have achieved, reflect their commitment to the certificate and the hard work that they have invested in their studies. Whilst they were given time each week to study and complete the relevant projects and modules, revision programmes were devised by the training manager at Howarth Timber Importers, in addition, to this structured time, the students also volunteered an enormous amount of their own time to study and revise for the certificate.
As a recognition of their commitment, achievements, hard work and dedication, Andrew Howarth, the Managing Director of the Howarth Timber Group Ltd is rewarding them with a trip to Sweden to visit one of the suppliers of Howarth (Timber Importers) Ltd to see the many aspects of the theoretical side of the course in practice.
