Aggregate

Aggregate products are a popular choice within landscaping and construction. At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we stock a wide range of attractive decorative aggregates, and high-quality construction aggregates including Hanson aggregates.

What is aggregate?

Aggregate products (also known as ‘aggs’) include decorative aggregates as well as aggregates used in construction.

  • Decorative aggregates: Decorative aggregates are small pieces of stone chosen to be an attractive and aesthetically appealing feature, usually within landscaping projects. For example, as plant toppers in flower beds or pots, to create a pathway or driveways, in rockeries and fishponds, and water features. Decorative aggregates are hard wearing and available in a variety of colours.
  • Construction aggregates: Construction aggregates (including gravel, crushed stone, and sand) are produced from natural sources and typically used as an additive for concrete. Other uses include drainage solutions, filling voids, protecting pipes, and creating a hard-standing surface. They can also be used in water filtration and sewage treatment processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Type 1 aggregate?
MOT Type 1 Aggregate is formed from recycled rubble and concrete, crushed to make it granular. This is a very popular aggregate choice as it is ideal for use in road construction and civil engineering. The granular aggregate is compacted for use as a sub base or base layer. Type 1 aggregate can be combined with cement to give it a higher bearing capacity.
How much aggregate do I need?
The amount of aggregate required will vary depending on the project. When looking at decorative aggregate, here is a rough guide of what you may require based on the area to cover: 1m2: approx. 100kg 5m2: approx. 1 bulk bag 10m2: approx 1 bulk bag (increase to 2 bulk bags if greater depth is required) 25m2: approx. 3 bulk bags If you are laying decorative aggregates for a driveway, a rough estimate based on an area of 5m x 5m at a depth of 40mm, would be to use three bulk bags of decorative aggregates (including slate chips or gravel). When selecting your choice of aggregate, keep in mind that a larger aggregate will usually settle and bond together better than smaller aggregates, making them better suited for high traffic areas such as driveways and footpaths.
