Chimney & Flues

A chimney is a structure that is used primarily for the ventilation of gas-based appliances, such as Boilers and Gas Stoves, as well as allowing for easy release of smoke from fireplaces or furnaces.

Chimneys are normally vertical to allow toxic gases to exit as quickly as possible, preventing them from entering your home and causing explosions or making you ill.

As ventilation is crucial to the efficiency of your Chimney, a Wire Balloon is a necessity. Placed on top of the Chimney, it prevents birds from nesting on it, as well as debris – particularly leaves - from falling into the chimney and causing problems.

Wire Balloons are a handy product, made from galvanised steel that is easily placed on top of a chimney flue or downpipe of your drainage system, to prevent a variety of unwanted things from entering, including:

  • Animals, such as mice, birds, squirrels etc
  • Leaves
  • Roofing Debris
  • Dirt carried in the wind

Balloons are also useful for preventing birds from building nests and causing hassle.

At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies, we have three sizes of Wire Balloon available, all of which are available in packs of five in the following sizes:

  • 63mm
  • 100mm
  • 225mm

The Balloons are designed to fit inside the flue or piping, creating a ballooning effect. Installation of the mesh is simple and doesn’t require no special tools and expertise.

Once in place, they require no maintenance.

Chimney and Flue Accessories include cleaning products, such as wire brushes, that should be used to ensure that they are able to function effectively. It is important to take good care of your chimney and flue because regular cleaning helps to prevent chimney fires and other problems from occurring.

It’s difficult to say exactly when you should think about cleaning your chimney, however, if you use your chimney during the winter months, we recommend cleaning it once the warmer months arrive.

If you don’t use your chimney very often, it’s easy to forget about it, however, it is still recommended to clean them to be sure that they are safe when you do decide to use them.
