Varnishes

Varnishes

Varnishes

A varnish is a hard protective finish or film used mainly for finishing of wood based products such as floors, doors, skirtings and architraves. Available in clear gloss, satin or matt finishes, these can be applied over wood stains as a final step to protection.

Clear Varnish

Clear Varnish is ideal for when you want to maintain the traditional look of the timber, whilst protecting the timber from scratches and marks. Re-varnishing is an on-going job for most timber surfaces, to ensure that the surface remains in top condition and protected from minor damage.

When to use Clear Varnish:

Clear Varnish is best used on “virgin” timber that has never been painted, stained or treated, such as doors, furniture, skirting boards etc.

In a Hurry?

Quick Dry Clear Varnishes are perfect if you need a surface to dry quickly, as these Varnishes will be touch dry within 20 minutes, and a second coat can be applied after just one hour.

Our Clear Varnishes are available in a variety of finishes: Gloss, Matt and Satin.

Coloured Varnish

Whilst Varnish is most commonly clear, Howarth Timber & Building Supplies offer a range of coloured varnishes that contain pigments, designed to match that original colour of the timber, so it is an ideal method of brightening up a wood surface.

Coloured Varnish prevents direct sunlight from discolouring the wood, and are generally used on exterior surface. However, the pigments do not last forever, and will eventually need re-applying.

Options for Coloured Varnish include:

  • Mahogany
  • Oak
  • Pine
  • Beech
  • Teak

Our Coloured Varnishes are available in Quick Dry options, in Gloss or Satin finishes.
