What can’t I use on laminate flooring to keep it clean?

Understanding how not to clean laminate hardwood floors is the first step in learning how to clean them.

On a laminate wood floor, there are a few common cleaning methods to avoid.

Avoid water

Because laminate's composite layer is made up of closely packed wood particles, it absorbs moisture as well as (and sometimes more than) solid wood planks. As a result, when the flooring absorbs water, it expands and can warp, distort, bubble, or even separate the boards' seams. Even though the top layer of laminate flooring is water-resistant, water can still seep through the cracks between planks if it’s left to sit. As a result, you should avoid mopping laminate floors with a lot of water, like you would with a regular wet mop. If there is a spill of water or another liquid on the floor, clean it up as soon as possible.

Can I use a steam mop on laminate floors?

The top layer (sometimes known as the 'wear layer') of laminate is a thin sheet of textured plastic. High heat can cause the wear layer to peel off or weaken the adhesive that holds the composite layer together by melting the plastic
and disrupting the texture.
As a result, utilising a steam cleaner on laminate flooring should be avoided at all costs. After just one cleaning, the combination of heat and moisture can cause lasting damage to the floor.

Over time, when floor waxes and polishes are piled up over time, they can make your floor look dull. So, avoid using hardwood floor cleaners that contain oil or ammonia.

How to clean laminate floors without leaving a film

Sometimes it cannot be helped when cleaning laminate flooring, as soap might leave a film behind. So, use it sparingly when cleaning laminate floors, and always clean up any leftovers before they dry, as they may stain.

What can I use to keep laminate floors clean?

Unlike carpet, laminate flooring is quite susceptible to dust and filth. As a result, it's critical to keep up with hoovering the laminate flooring to remove any loose debris or grit and prepare for cleaning. Use a vacuum with hardwood flooring attachments to perform this, since this restricts what may go wrong and helps prevent any marks. Also, be cautious while moving the hoover across the floor, since grit can collect on the wheels and harm the laminate.

Can I mop on laminate floors?

Mops are your best friends when it comes to cleaning laminate floors. The best kind of mop is one that will pick up dirt and not leave behind excess water or scratch the laminate flooring itself. Therefore, the best solution when it comes to cleaning laminate flooring after you have hoovered is to use a microfibre mop. These mops pick up dust whilst simultaneously giving your floor an extra shine, making it multi-purposeful and efficient. They also require less water than a standard mop, so you can ensure that your laminate floor is in safe hands. Quick Step offer a cleaning kit, which is available to purchase on our website.
Also, if you don’t have a microfibre mop, other mops that would be suitable include a specific laminate floor mop or wood floor mop.

To clean laminate floors using a mop, start by spraying it with laminate floor cleaning solution before gliding it across the floor. If your mop absorbs too much water, remember to drain it so your flooring doesn't get too wet! Allow the floor to dry after washing, and open windows and doors for additional ventilation to speed up the drying process.

Can you use a carpet cleaner on laminate flooring?

Unfortunately, carpet cleaner can not be used on laminate flooring. However, you can easily create your own solution that is just as good at cleaning laminate floors. All you have to do is mix 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water, then add 1 teaspoon of washing up liquid and mix well before transferring to a spray bottle.
As strange as it may sound, using vinegar on floors is a fantastic cleaning method that produces gleaming results!

After you've cleaned your laminate flooring completely, attempt to preserve it in the best possible condition. It's best not to apply polish, varnish, or wax on laminate flooring because most varieties come with a pre-finished wear layer that never has to be treated.

We hope this guide has helped you achieve squeaky clean and gleaming laminate flooring! If you need any further help, you can contact our customer services on the number 01472 907051.
