Heating Controls

Heating Controls

Controlling the temperature of your home has many benefits:

Ensures that you and your family are warm, but not too hot and that the heating is only when it needs to be, and where it needs to be.
Allows you to take control of how much energy your use, by turning the temperature down and being able to keep an eye on it.
Carbon Dioxide emissions are reduced, and fuel is not wasted.

The Heating Controls that your home has, or needs, could be made up from a variety of components, including:

Room Thermostat. Thermostats are smart in that they “sense” how warm the system is, and when it reaches a set level, it will seek to maintain that temperature. For example, if you want your home to be kept at a temperature of 40 degrees, if the Thermostat detects that the system is below that, it will activate the boiler and warm the house up until it reaches 40 degrees. This prevents your home from becoming too warm, and saves energy by not having the boiler on all of the time.
Radiator Thermostat. A Radiator Thermostat is the simplest method of temperature control and is ideal for families who have different requirements for each room of the house. For example, if you have a spare bedroom, there is no point wasting energy heating the room up, when no one is in there. On the other hand, it allows different family members to set how warm they have their individual bedrooms.
Programmers and Time Switches. These are incredibly useful if you want your home to be warmed up at a specific time of day, for example, first thing in the morning when you get out of bed. Programmers and Time Switches allow you to regulate when the heating system is turned on, and when it isn’t. This helps to conserve energy during the hours of the day when you are at work, or fast asleep.

How much money can Heating Controls save me?
We all know that the age of your boiler has a big impact on how much energy you consume. However, heating controls can also have a big impact, no matter how old or new your system is. The idea being that they allow you to fully control when the boiler heats up water and your home, meaning that you only use what you need and therefore only pay for what you need.

It is difficult to distinguish exactly how much money a household could save, however it the Energy Saving Trust suggest that “installing and correctly using a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves could save £70-$150 and 310kg and 630kg carbon dioxide a year.”

Indeed, they recommend turning down the thermostat of your home by just one degree to save roughly £75 a year.

Do I need to replace my entire boiler system, if I want to install Heating Controls?
No, you can install or upgrade your heating controls without disturbing your boiler at all. In fact, it is recommended to upgrade your controls if you have old ones, as advancements make newer ones much more efficient.
