Washers are a thin disk-shaped piece that has a hole in the middle. It is used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a nut, bolt or screw. They are normally made from metal, however plastic ones also exist.
Washers have a couple of purposes:
- They prevent galvanic corrosion
- Allow pressure to be distributed more evenly, which is necessary to protect the surface
- A Washer keeps the nut level, which – in the long-term – prevents the nut from gradually becoming loose
At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies, we have a variety of Washers in several sizes (it is important to use the correct tools that correspond with the Washer):
NOTE: Not to be confused with “Gaskets” – rubber “washers” – that are used in Taps.
