Cement and lime are essential in construction. They are used in many types of mortar, which act as binding materials. Together, they help give buildings strength and long-lasting durability.

What is Cement?

Cement is a fine powder that works as a binder. It is usually mixed with sand, gravel, or other aggregates to make products such as:

  • Mortar
  • Concrete
  • Render
  • Screed

At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies, we stock a wide range of cement from leading brands including Hanson, Everbuild, Sika, Rugby, Siniat, Febflor, and Bostik.

Is Cement Waterproof?

Cement on its own is not waterproof. When mixed with water, it forms a paste that binds the aggregates in mortar, concrete, and plaster.

To make the final mix water-resistant, you can add special admixtures or additives before it sets.

Types of Cement and Lime

Below are common types and their uses:

  • Multicem – A general-purpose cement with long shelf life. Offers good workability and frost resistance once set.
  • PostFix – Designed for securing concrete posts. Available in rapid-setting options.
  • Trowel Mastic – Used for waterproofing, pointing, sealing, and bedding. Best applied with a trowel.
  • Plasterer’s Stabilising Primer – Prepares internal walls for new plaster, suitable for both new and previously plastered surfaces.
  • Rapid Set Cement – Ideal for quick fixes or when waterproofing is needed fast.
  • Fire Cement – Heat-resistant for use in flue pipes, boilers, and fire bricks.
  • Sand and Cement Mix – Pre-mixed for convenience. Just add water and apply.
  • Hydrated Lime – Improves water retention, flexibility, and bonding in external mortar or render.
  • Macadam – Cold-lay asphalt for quick driveway or path repairs, including potholes.
  • Self-Levelling Compound – Levels uneven floors before laying flooring. Easy to apply and fast-setting.
  • Concrete Hardener & Dustproofer – Strengthens and seals concrete surfaces, helping prevent dust and surface bloom.
  • Lime Mortar – A breathable mortar that draws moisture to the surface, reducing damp issues.
  • Lime Mortar Mix – Ready-mixed lime mortar, saving preparation time. Suitable for building, rendering, and pointing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cement and lime?
Lime mortar is a very workable, strong and durable choice however cement generally has a quicker curing time. Both cement and lime may be used as a mix for concrete applications that require strength and durability, and workability as well as a quicker curing time. Lime mortar mix is longer lasting than cement as it is less prone to cracking or needing repair, whereas cement is susceptible to cracking as a structural area settles. Lime is much more breathable than cement and can reduce moisture inside the building, whereas cement forms a waterproof barrier and can absorb water causing moisture to collect. Producing lime releases carbon dioxide, however lime mortar continuously absorbs carbon dioxide, therefore lime is considered carbon neutral.
Why add lime to cement mortar?
By incorporating a proportion of hydrated lime into a cement-based mixture improves the plasticity and workability of the cement, making the product easier to handle on the trowel. It can also increase water retention which helps improve the contact and bond with the substrate.
