Additives & Admixtures

There are major differences between additives and admixtures when it comes to cement and concrete admixtures. Additives can be any substance added to something in small quantities which ultimately improves or preserves it, whereas admixture are components added to a concrete mixture while mixing. For example, to make concrete, there are three core ingredients: aggregates, cement, and water.

Examples of some chemical admixtures are: air-entraining, water-reducing, retarding, accelerating and plasticizers - which all ultimately reduce the cost of building with concrete, and are used to ensure that certain properties maintain a cured concrete quality.
