Roof Battens
What are roof battens?
Roof battens are lengths of wood that are made of rough sawn treated timber, that are laid in-between rafters to secure the roofing felt and are typically used to add a gap between the roof tiles and the roof deck. They are significant in the structure of a roof and serve a wide number of purposes, such as a roof batten fence.
How do they work?
Roofing battens serve several purposes, such as that they give rigour to the roofing structure and are often used to fit to the roof covering in straight, consistent rows to provide a strong anchor for the nails or clips in the tiles or slates. A roof batten is made up of a very strong material, and can hold a lot of weight.
There are certain rules when governing the size and type of battens to be used for roofing and have standards in dictating which size and type can be used for various spacings and roof coverings. The size of a roof batten is very important to ensure that the roof is strong enough. As any batten measuring less than 25mm in thickness can be considered ‘under-measure’ and should not be used as it could become unstable.
