Gravel
Decorative Gravel is typically made up of small mixed stones and has a large number of uses, including transforming gardens, driveways, paths, water features, or ponds into functional areas that look great. Gravel can also be mixed with cement as a building aggregate to create roads or hardstanding.
Decorative gravel deposits are formed naturally through erosion and weathering. It can also be produced in quarries or gravel pits where bigger rocks are ground down to create gravel. The most commonly used rocks for this are sandstone, basalt, and limestone and it is usually produced in Southern England.
Most decorative garden gravel is known as Pea Gravel, aptly named due to its pea-sized rocks that are rounded in shape with a smooth surface. An alternative decorative gravel to this is Crushed Granite Gravel, which isn’t smooth but makes an attractive patio area.
Popular decorative garden gravel colours are Golden Gravel, Yorkshire Cream Gravel, and White Decorative Gravel. Both are low maintenance options, ideal for creating gravel paths, driveways, and garden features. When selecting decorative gravel, choose a finder grade. Medium and large grade gravel is better suited to areas that may be used as paths or driveways.
Plants for decorative gravel gardens
Decorative gravel around plants makes a beautiful garden or landscaping feature. Gravel is well suited to Mediterranean-style plants, which are used to lower water levels. To prevent weeds from growing we recommend laying Landtex Landscape Fabric between the soil and gravel.
We offer gravel in two bag sizes – standard for small projects and bulk for larger surface areas. For more information on decorative gravel pop into your nearest Howarth branch and our friendly teams will be happy to help.
