Tools list

Before you start fitting a door handle, gather these tools and materials:

  • Internal door handle set
  • Screws (usually included)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Chisel
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Door latch (if needed)

Step 1: Mark the handle position

First, decide where the handle should sit. The usual height is about 1 metre from the floor.

  1. Measure and mark the latch position on the edge of the door.
  2. Mark the centre point for the spindle hole on the door face.

This is the first step in learning how to fit internal door handles correctly.

Step 2: Drill the holes

You’ll need to drill two holes when fitting a door handle:

  • Latch hole: On the door’s edge for the latch.
  • Spindle hole: Through the door face for the spindle.

Make sure both holes line up so the handle works smoothly.

Step 3: Fit the latch

Insert the latch into the hole on the door edge. If it sticks out, use a chisel to make a small recess so it sits flush. This gives you a neat finish when fitting door handles.

Secure the latch with screws.

Step 4: Install the handles

Now you’re ready to fit the handles:

  1. Push the spindle through the latch hole.
  2. Position each handle on either side of the door, lining them up with the spindle.
  3. Screw both handles in place.

This is the key part of learning how to fit an internal door handle correctly.

Step 5: Fit the strike plate

Close the door and mark where the latch touches the frame. Chisel a small recess for the strike plate, then screw it in.

How do you fit a door handle without a latch?

Just skip the latch step. Some doors, like cupboards, don’t need one.

Can I do this without power tools?

Yes! A manual screwdriver and hand drill work fine for fitting a door handle, but it may take longer.
