Blocked gutters are one of the leading causes of damp and water damage in UK homes. And let’s face it, it feels like it rains most of the time. Leaves, moss and debris can quickly clog your guttering, and if ignored, these blockages can lead to costly repairs.

Why is gutter cleaning important?

Gutter cleaning is important as it protects your home by directing rainwater away from walls and foundations. When gutters are blocked:

  • Water can overflow and cause damp patches
  • Sagging or broken gutters
  • Downpipes can crack or split

A little bit of maintenance can save you a bunch of expensive problems later down the line.

How often should you clean your gutters?

You should try to clean your gutters at least twice a year, ideally:

  • Late Autumn: After the leaves have fallen but before the freezing weather sets in
  • Late Spring: To clear out any moss or debris left over from winter storms

You may need to clean your gutters more than this if your property is surrounded by lots of trees, you live in an area with heavy moss growth or if you’ve had recent storms or high winds.

Which gutter cleaning tools should I use to DIY the job?

If you want to make cleaning your gutters a DIY job, and you don’t mind heights, you can grab yourself a ladder and use gloves and a scoop to remove the debris from your gutters.

If you choose to hire a professional to clean them for you, this can be a much more convenient option as they will have powerful gutter cleaning tools. On average, it looks like you could be paying around £50-£300 depending on the services and provider you choose.
