Glass wool insulation
What is Glass Wool Insulation?
Glass Wool, also known as Fibreglass Insulation, is made by mixing natural glass with recycled glass. The recycled glass can come from items like car windscreens, bottles, and window panes. This glass is melted, pushed through a fine mesh to create thin fibres, and then cooled naturally.
Benefits of Glass Wool
- Acoustic insulation – Helps reduce noise transfer between rooms or areas. Commonly used in places where soundproofing is needed but compressive strength is not. Often sold as fibreglass batts.
- Water resistance – Works well in cavity walls and can be adapted to suit specific wall conditions.
- Fire safety – Non-combustible and won’t burn. It has a European A1 fire rating, making it effective in protecting a building during a fire.
- Thermal efficiency – A lightweight, cost-effective way to keep heat in. It can achieve the same results as other materials at about half the weight.
Where Can Glass Wool Be Used?
- Lofts – Loft insulation helps save both energy and money. Our Spacesaver range comes in thin, strong rolls that are easy to store and install.
- Walls built to regulations – Some walls need to meet specific building standards. RD35 is a high-density glass wool option that is slim yet meets a variety of wall construction requirements.
- Partition (party) walls – These internal walls separate rooms. Glass Wool reduces sound travel between spaces.
- External timber frame walls – Improves both thermal and acoustic performance, keeping buildings warm and blocking unwanted noise.
