Are you looking for a concrete fence post or a timber fence post? Common things to consider include:
Appearance
For many people, choosing between wooden fence posts and concrete fence posts is based on taste and personal preference. Generally, timber is considered to be more attractive to look at. Wooden fence posts have always been a popular choice because timber is naturally nice to look at, will complement most gardens, and can easily match fence panels.
Weight
Concrete fence posts are a solid material, meaning that it can be incredibly heavy. The weight of concrete ensures that they are substantially more resilient against strong winds than wood fence posts. This is especially important to think about if you live in an area that is prone to high winds.
Durability
If they are looked after, concrete posts can last for many years before needing to be replaced. Concrete fence posts require less maintenance than wooden fence posts. A natural product like timber requires regular treatment to prevent it from gradually splitting over time which would, of course, affect the overall strength of your fencing. It’s worth thinking about what environmental factors might reduce the lifespan of timber posts faster than normal, such as sea spray which can speed up the effects of natural rotting.
Maintenance
Concrete fence posts are very low maintenance; they don't require any treatment to protect them and are strong, so damage is less likely to occur as a result of strong winds, etc. Moisture is unable to rise from the ground into the concrete.
Wooden Fence Posts are available as pressure treated, meaning that they are protected from rot and decay that can occur in timber products, especially posts that are being inserted into the ground.
