Nuts, Bolts & Washers
Nuts, Bolts and Washers play a crucial role in many tasks and generally (although not always) work together.
Bolts are a type of fastening that have a helical (smooth space curve) ridge that winds around the thread. If the Bolt is pushed through a hole, a Nut is typically twisted onto the end of it, using the ridge. Nuts are generally chunky and strong, which allows them to secure Bolts in place and thus creating a reliable fastening.
A Washer is a thin round that has a hole in the middle, similar to a Nut. However, a Washer is considerably thinner that a Nut, and unlike a Nut a Washer is not always necessary. When they are used, the Washer will be pushed onto the thread before the Nut and could be used for a variety of purposes, such as:
- Helping with the overall prevention of corrosion
- Acting as a Spacer
- Protecting the Nut against general wear
- As a Locking Device
Rubber ones may be used to reduce the impact of vibrations.
