At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we offer a huge variety of Hardwoods that are perfect for flooring, decking, decorative moulding, stair parts and cladding. Hardwoods can also be used to make musical instruments and wooden furniture.

Misconceptions about Hardwood:
It is commonly believed – probably due to its name - that Hardwood is denser than Softwood, however this is not necessarily true.

What trees are classed as Hardwood?
A tree is classed as being Hardwood if it derives from a deciduous tree, meaning that it loses its leaves in the autumn. Hardwood trees generally grow slowly, giving them time to grow stronger. However, no all Hardwoods are strong. Balsa Wood, for example, is commonly used in model aircrafts because it is a light and delicate wood, however it derives from a deciduous tree and is classed as a Hardwood.
