Sheet Materials

Sheet Materials are engineered woods that are made by binding the timber material together with adhesives. The timber is typically formed into tiny strips and bound to create layers, with wooden veneers sometimes used if appearances are important.

At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we offer a great range of sheet materials that are suitable for a variety of tasks depending on their thickness and construction. Some sheets are suitable for general use, whilst others available are moisture-resistant and/or load-bearing, meaning that they can be used in external or structural situations. It is important to double-check that the board you are purchasing is suitable for the intended application.

The high-quality sheet materials that we have on offer include:

Plywood sheets are a perfect choice if you are looking for something that is versatile and ideal for general use. We have a selection of plywood available that can be used to build furniture and shelving. Certain types of ply can also be used as panelling, walls, and flooring.

Chipboard available from Howarth Timber & Building Supplies comes in two grades; P1-grade chipboard is for standard joinery use, whilst P5-grade is suitable for structural use such as chipboard flooring.

OSB Board is also available in two grades. OSB2 is ideal for general use such as shelving and pallets, whilst OSB3 is the better choice for humid environments.

MDF Board or Medium Density Fibreboard is a popular choice for the construction of furniture because it usually has a smooth surface that will accept paint, allowing you to achieve the perfect finished look. Some MDF sheets will have a timber veneer if you want to achieve a wood grain appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MDF and plywood?
MDF is ideal for cutting, machining, and drilling as it does not chip easily. However, plywood is a much stronger material, which can be used for doors, floors, staircases, and outdoor furniture.
What sheet wood can be used outside?
For exterior projects or projects exposed to weather conditions, you need to use plywood that is suited for those conditions.
How do I fit engineered wood flooring?
To fit engineered wood flooring, you need to first prepare your floor to ensure that the area you’re working on is properly equipped. Then, you will need to lay an underlay for the wood flooring to be placed on top of, which will ultimately act as a protective membrane providing a barrier to stop moisture from getting through to the flooring. After that, you can start laying the planks, making sure that all of them are straight and even. Lastly, remove all the spaces around the edges of the flooring and cover the expansion gap with a scotia bead.
