Radiators & Heaters

Radiators have been around for a long time as hot water is a very common form of heating for homes. A radiator is essentially a metal structure that is made up of hollow areas that fill up with hot water, this in turn heats up the metal which warms up the room. Eventually the water cools, and the cold water moves down to the bottom of the radiator, before leaving via a pipe. The hot water stays at the top, which is why radiators are typically hotter at the top than at the bottom. Hot water is conveyed to the radiators using one of three methods: pressure pump, gravity, and convection. They are a necessity for 21st century modern life, and at Howarth we have a wide range of radiators and electric heaters to help you spread the warmth.

Types of Radiators

Before you decide which radiator would be the best fit for you, there are a few things you need to consider before making any decisions, for example: the type of windows you have (single our double glazed), whether your house is sheltered or exposed, and whether the size of the radiators could fit inside your home.

Steel is the most popular material of radiator, as it is an excellent heat conductor. They also heat up quickly, and they retain heat for a long time even after the central heating has switched off. Column radiators are traditionally styled radiators and are made from hollow tubes of mild steel or cast iron, and have been designed to maximise the surface area, which allows them to heat a room up rapidly.

Panel radiators are one of the original forms of radiator and can distribute both convection and radiant heat. They are fast, silent, and responsive.

Compact radiators are like panel radiators, except that they have a more modern look to them and can blend into any room in the house to provide guaranteed heating.

Towel rails have become widely popular over the last few years due to its trendy, modern appearance in most home and hotel bathrooms. Although towel radiators may not give off an extreme amount of heat in comparison to our compact radiators, they are great for keeping your towels fresh and dry and are nice to look at.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the best radiators?
At Howarth, we have a wide range of radiators on offer. Efficiency is important, and with new radiators, you'll want to look at the heat output to make sure you select one that's right for your room. It also depends on the size of your room, and what kind of design and style you’d like. Modern vertical radiators are a great choice as they are durable, have a great heat output, and are contemporary and elegant in design. However, they do take a while to heat up, and are quite big compared to other radiators. Compact radiators are also a good choice, as they are smaller and better for traditional spaces. They’re also lightweight and inexpensive but do contain a plainer design. Overall, there are a wide range of good radiators, but choosing which one is best for you ultimately depends on a lot of factors, such as heat requirements of the space, room sizes, window dimensions and even the materials used in the walls.
Do radiators use gas?
Gas central heating is one of the most widely used heating systems in the UK, with most homes using it. Radiators for gas central heating use a combination of convected and radiated heat to distribute heat. Hot water from the pipes warms the surface of a gas central heating radiator, which then radiates heat into the room. Cold air passes through the radiator channels and is heated by the hot pipes, circulating warm air across the room, and heating it via convection. This creates a comfortable and efficient thermal balance. However, because water takes longer to travel from the boiler to the radiators, your rooms may take longer to heat up.
How to turn off a radiator?
If your radiator has a thermostatic valve, locate it on the left side of the radiator to turn it off. Then clockwise turn the valve until the dial reads 0. Next, on the right hand side of the radiator, locate the second valve called the RAD valve, and twist it clockwise until it no longer twists. The radiator will be totally switched off and cooled once both valves are closed.
How to turn on a radiator?
To turn the radiator back on, turn the thermostatic valve anti-clockwise until you get to the desired number you’d like, such as 3 or 4. Then, on the right hand side of the radiator, locate the second valve and twist it anti-clockwise until it stops twisting. When the valves are fully on, turn it back a quarter, as this stops the valves from ceasing up from corrosion.
