Chisels
Chisels are used to shape wood, stone or metal. The cutting tool includes a sharpened edge at the end of a metal, which when used allows the user to carefully create exact sizes of material for joining together. It is often struck by a mallet or mechanical power to easily remove excess material from the object.
At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we hold a range of chisels for metalworking and woodworking including;
- Cold Chisels
- Bolster Chisels
- Wood Chisels

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a chisel used for?
Chisel tools are usually used for cutting or carving hard materials such as metal, stone, or wood.
How to sharpen a chisel
When sharpening a chisel, we would recommend using a honing guide to allow you to see the correct angle of the bevel for the chisel. So, when inserting your chisel into the honing guide, don’t over tighten the fixing screws as you need to make sure the end of the blade is exactly straight and parallel to the guide. The guide will have clear markings to show the degree you’ll be sharpening the bevel at, which in this case, will be 30 degrees. So then line up the end of the chisel with the 30-degree marker on the guide and tighten the screws so that the chisel is firmly gripped. It's also important that when you start using the sharpening stone that you make sure the stone doesn’t move whilst you’re using it, and to use oil. Once you’ve made sure that the station is equipped properly, use the heavy grit of the sharpening stone, and start to move the chisel firmly and steadily across the entire length of the stone. Repeat the process on each side until you’ve got the required angle that you desire.
How many types of chisels are there?
There are 5 types of chisels – bevel edge, mortise, sash mortise, paring and corner chisels.
