Stair Base Rail
What is a base rail?
Stair base rails run along the staircase, where spindles and panels are usually fitted into or onto the base rail which is then supported by newel posts. There are different types of base rails available at Howarth, such as timber pine base rails, grooved pine base rails, white primed base rails, and white oak base rails.
Base rails can fit spindles that are 32mm or 41mm, and we also offer a variety of base rail sizes, such as 2.4m, 3.6m and 3.2m lengths, plus a variety of width and thicknesses.
A grooved base rail has a groove running through the centre of the rail, which means it is easier for spindles to be fitted. The size of the groove can vary, for example, a 32mm or 41mm grooved base rail has the same overall dimension.
Un-grooved base rails are solid which means that spindles can be screwed directly onto the rail. They are best used with metal spindles or glass brackets/clamps.
