How to clean Artificial Grass

Artificial grass stays green all year round, and one of its biggest benefits is the time you save on garden maintenance. It doesn’t need trimming, mowing, watering, or fertilising, so you can spend more time enjoying your garden, family, and other activities instead of worrying about how to maintain your lawn.

However, to make sure your artificial lawn stays looking fresh and brand new all year round, you’ll need to give it a onceover clean every now and then - and know how to get rid of stains and spills when and if they occur. Therefore, follow the steps in this blog to find the best way to clean your artificial grass.

Over the time you own your artificial grass, you can give it a light brush every week to remove any light build-up of dust and dirty. However, you will need to give it a more thorough clean once a month to keep it looking clean and inviting for yourself and even for guests.

Step 1:

The first step is to brush the grass, which you can do by using a broom or plastic rake so you can maintain the springy, fresh grass effect. If something heavy has left marks in the grass, such as a garden table or playset, you may have to brush against the grain to give it a spruced-up appearance.

Start in one corner of your garden and work your way across, then tackle the entire lawn in strips - like you would if you were mowing it.

Step 2:

The second step is to get rid of leaves, which can become a regular issue during the Autumn and Winter months. Use a leaf blower to get rid of the leaves and debris by blowing all of it to one corner so it’s easier to collect in one go. If you do not own a leaf blower, you can also do this by hand or use a dustpan and brush. Do this regularly to help prevent weeds from growing. If you do see weed growing, use a water-based moss, and weed killer agent. So, when the weeds and moss have died off, you can make sure to remove them alongside any leaves and debris.

Step 3:

The last step is to fill in theturf with sand, which you can do by scattering the sand across the turf. After you’ve done that, take your broom and brush the sand in, evenly distributing it over the entire area of your lawn. Make sure that no excess sand is in certain areas, and then once it’s done, leave for one to two hours before walking on it.

If you also manage to accidentally spill something onto the astro turf, maybe from a summer garden party or barbeque, there are some simple steps to be able to remove it. However, it does depend on what kind of liquid or substance was spilt on the astro-turf. For example, if it’s a drink like a beer or juice, grab a paper towel and dab it, making sure to not rub it into the grass. This should remove the traces of the liquid. But if you want to be sure that it’s gone completely, rinse it with some water.
If it’s something you’ve only just noticed, but it looks like it’s been there for a while, mix a teaspoon of detergent into a bucket with some water. Then take the bucket to the stain and use a sponge or soft cloth to rub into the stain until it’s removed. After it seems to have disappeared, use a water hose to rinse away the detergent.
