What is Top Soil?
Top soil is a dark coloured, nutrient rich soil that is often layered on top of a harder soil, particularly in flower beds or along garden borders. It is popular amongst gardeners and landscapers as it is easy to work with and contains organic materials that help plants and flowers to grow and thrive. Top Soil is also commonly used as a nutrient rich base for laying turf.

Bark Chippings are a common sight in UK gardens and landscaping projects for creating pathways and enhancing flower beds predominantly because they are practical and look great.
What are bark chippings?
Bark Chippings are made from the bark of common trees that have been shredded into large chunks. As a cost-effective option, they are often used as a “mulch” to create a layer on top of soil. Wood bark chippings naturally absorb moisture which helps to reduce the growth of weeds and alleviate flooding. Garden bark chippings can also help to make your outdoor space look attractive and interesting whilst being soft and safe enough for spaces that will be used by small children or pets, including play areas.

You will ideally need around four inches of top soil to root in. However, not everyone will need to add four inches, so you may just need to add an inch or two depending on the quality and depth of the existing soil.
What is screened top soil?

Therefore, this process means that you can choose how fine or how chunky you would like the topsoil to be. The main benefit of this is that it allows for optimal water flow and a finer distribution of essential nutrients and minerals.

What is the difference between top soil and compost?
Ultimately, topsoil is a more well-rounded soil option because of both the nutrients and structure it offers for plants. Compost is drier but has a softer substance, whereas topsoil can retain more water and may come with more natural debris depending on the quality of it.
How deep should Top Soil be?
The depth of top soil required is dependent upon the project and intended use. When creating a lawn base, it is recommended for the top soil to be at least 4 inches (10cm) deep. If top soil is to grow plants in, the roots will need space to grow and thrive in an area with plenty of nutrients, therefore it would be recommend to use at least 6 inches (15cm) deep of top soil. For larger plants with larger roots, the depth will need to be increased accordingly.
