What is CLS timber?
CLS timber is produced from softwoods such as fir, pine, and spruce. The wood is kiln-dried for increased durability and to reduce moisture content, and it is also treated with pesticides to keep insects and decay at bay. Also, all four sides of the CLS timber are surfaced to give rounded edges and a smoother finish.
What does CLS timber stand for?
CLS timber is an abbreviation for Canadian Lumber Standard, as it was originally produced in Canada. It was first used to build strong timber-framed buildings or structures before becoming widespread all over the world.

What are the main benefits of CLS timber?
CLS timber contains several key benefits to consider when opting to use it in your project. Such as:
- It has excellent strength, and a higher durability when compared to other types of wood. This makes it an excellent choice for construction, particularly internal structural projects like stud walls or partitions.
- CLS timber is also particularly easy to transport, and incredibly safe to handle.
- It lacks huge knots on its edges and features properties that minimise the spread of future fire breakouts.
- There is also a wide range of CLS timber sizes available, in a variety of widths and lengths, making it an excellent choice for not just minimising the time spent cutting it to size, but for also lowering the cost of timber waste.

Is CLS timber treated?
If you are
planning to use
CLS timber outside, it should be pressure treated. You should
then also treat it further to offer even more protection against elements. Thankfully,
liquid-repelling preservatives, paints with block UV rays and sealers that
maintain colour can all be used on CLS timber.
