Fence
Fencing is a common choice of structure for many properties, and at Howarth, we have an extensive range of high-quality fencing available. Therefore, it’s a good idea to think about what you may need from a fence; for example, is your garden fence going to be solely for increased privacy, increased security, or do you want an aesthetically pleasing fence that meets multiple purposes. Here are some common considerations when choosing fencing:
Security
Security is important when choosing the best option for a boundary and when it comes to fencing for security, a taller fence is generally considered to be better. At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we offer fence options up to 6ft. If you would prefer additional height, a trellis can be added to make scaling a fence even trickier. You will also benefit from the option of growing climber plants up your fence and trellis for an attractive fence line.Privacy
Privacy is another important factor for consideration. You may want to create extra privacy between your property and a neighbouring property, public footpath, or field. In this situation, fence boards or fence panels that are fitted without gaps are an excellent choice.Weather Conditions
Fencing can act as a barrier to wind or offer shelter from rain or sunlight. If weather conditions are a problem in your property location, ensure that the material your fence is produced from is suitable for the job. If you choose a wood fence, timber treatment and secure installation will increase the lifespan of your fence. If you are regularly faced with extreme weather conditions such as gale force winds, it is worth keeping in mind that replacing traditional fence boards is often less costly than replacing solid fence panels. At Howarth, we offer a wide range of fencing products, including:
Fence Panels and trellis
Fence panels can feature either horizontal or vertical planks and are ready-made; designed to easily install between fence posts. Trellis’ can be used decoratively and to encourage climbing plants. Trellis’ are usually fixed to a fence panel or wall, although free-standing alternatives are also available. Gardens can benefit from a trellis when used to create an attractive focal point.
Feather edge boards
Feather edge boards are used to construct closeboard fencing. The boards are overlapped vertically to create a fence. They are particularly helpful when fencing and awkward shape or sized property.
Rails and palings
Rails and palings are components of a fence used to strengthen and hold together the fence. Rails are placed horizontally between or across fence posts, such as post and rail fencing. They can also be used to attach fence boards to. Fence palings are usually installed vertically along a fence rail to strengthen the fence and add a decorative touch.
Fence posts
Fence posts support the entire fence and keep it upright. They are usually installed into the ground, often in a cement base. We offer cement fence posts and timber fence posts, all high quality with various size options.
Gravel Boards
Gravel boards are placed at the foot of your fencing to help protect a wood fence from rising moisture and preventing rot from occurring.
Fence finishes
Wood fence treatments are an important part of caring for your fence in order to keep it looking attractive and extending its life expectancy. We offer stains and varnishes for protection with a beautiful finish, and preservatives to protect the timber from insects, fungi, and moisture. Wood fencing is often dip-treated which offers some protection, but we recommend the regular application of treatment to ensure the wood remains resistant to rot and decay.
Fence fixings
Fence fixings are an integral part of keeping your fence stable and resilient.
Fence Boards
Fence boards are purchased individually for use alongside posts and rails to create a long and continuous fence.
You often won’t need to apply for planning permission for a new garden fence, however if your new fence will be more than 2 metres tall when it was not before, you may need planning permission (this often reduces to 1 metre if the fencing adjoins with either a road or a footpath). You may also need to check for planning permission needs if your property has listed status, a property you share a boundary with has listed status, or your property is on an open-plan development. Contact your local authority for more details on planning permission requirements.
