How to keep Artificial Grass looking fresher for longer

Are you wanting to discover the secret to keeping your artificial grass looking fresh? Our guide will show you how!

Artificial grass is a dream come true for families around the country, as it allows you to say buh-bye to hours of mowing overgrown lawns, scavenging to eliminate pesky weeds, and attempting to get rid of large muddy messes that your actual grass turns into after the unpredictable British weather.
Instead, you can spend your spare time enjoying your outdoor space doing what you love, with the family and friends you have.

Also, if you are looking to invest in artificial grass and you are unsure on which to pick, you can read our guide on how to choose the right artificial grass for your garden, here.

If you recently installed artificial grass in your outdoor area, chances are you want to continue to keep it looking good for as long as possible, and there is no doubt that prevention is better than cure. However, if you’ve had your grass for a while, you may have noticed that it’s starting to seem a little dull.

As a result, if you need some help or advice on how to keep your artificial grass looking fresher for longer, here are our tips.

Step 1: Treat it like a Carpet

Artificial lawns are very similar to carpets in that the main problem you most likely experience with them is that the fibres of the grass become flat. Because of this, there are several contributing factors to this occurrence, and how you deal with it will depend on the challenge:

Challenge: Heavy traffic

Essentially, your artificial grass could be being used as a route to other parts of the garden that are used regularly by members of your household, as well as by friends. The repeated nature of this means that parts of your artificial grass will begin to look ‘patchy,’ as some areas become flat whilst other less-travelled regions will look neater.

Solution: Consider creating a pathway or steppingstones across your lawn that lead to other areas, using paving slabs. This is where you can get as creative as you want! Work your artificial grass around the paving and you could create something that isn’t just practical but also looks great.

Challenge: Heavy equipment

Whether its garden furniture such as tables, chairs and benches, or heavy-set planters and plant posts that will adorn your garden, it is inevitable that the heavy pressure will press down and send the grass fibres in all directions.

Solution: Regularly re-position anything heavy that sits on your turf so that the same sections aren’t constantly being squashed repeatedly and have time to replenish before too much damage is caused. Changing the placement of the pieces will help to even out the appearance of your grass.

What if my Artificial Grass is already Flat?

If you have noticed that your artificial grass is looking slightly limp, don’t panic! Simply take a stiff brush and carefully stimulate the pile to encourage it to look fresher and ‘perkier.’ A stiff yard broom will be best, particularly on larger areas, however, if you are trying to revitalise smaller patches, you could use an artificial grass hand brush.

Also, if you have not already installed an artificial grass underlay, that could also have a huge effect on the look and feel of your fake grass. The underlay, which is often constructed of spongey memory foam, substantially improves the feel of the artificial grass, making it much softer underfoot and providing a cushioned, luxurious surface for you to walk on.

Challenge: Shiny object syndrome

This is very likely to be something that you won’t have thought of, however, a poorly placed shiny object can cause a lot of problems for your artificial grass. Some of the shiny objects that are commonly used in the garden include:

  • Shed windows
  • Glazed features, particularly as decorations on plant pots
  • Mirror decorations that are often used in smaller spaces to make them appear bigger
  • CDs that are hung strategically to deter birds

Why are they a problem?: When the light reflects off a shiny object and onto your grass, the surface acts as a natural magnifier, heating up the sun's rays and eventually singeing the look of the fibres.

Solution: Try to be smart about the placement of any glass surfaces and constantly consider the route of the sun throughout the day, especially in the middle of the day in high summer when it will be at its hottest and most damaging. Placing objects in darker dry areas is sometimes preferable if it means they won't damage your artificial grass.

Challenge: Foreign objects

This includes twigs, soil, and leaves which on their own won’t cause any direct harm to your lawn, however, they will attract the bane of all gardeners' lives, the frustrating weed.

Solution: Take some time to periodically remove any organic items from your lawn using either a stiff brush or a plastic rake. If you find that your grass is in need of a deep clean, you can even invest in some artificial lawn cleaner, as well as a hoover cleaner for cleaning up any fallen nature.

Challenge: Discolouration

There are several things that could cause your artificial grass to lose it’s beautiful colouring, with the most common being our beloved pets.

Solution: Using an artificial grass washer can instantly refresh your lawn and restore its beauty. Simply spray the solution directly onto your grass (no need to dilute) and all dirt, stains, and smells will be quickly removed. Simple as that!

Now that your yard is looking beautiful, it's time to unwind and enjoy the oncoming landscaping season!
