What are decorative aggregates?

Decorative aggregates are a versatile, simple, and cost-effective way of revitalising or transforming your outdoor space. This may be a patio area, driveway, pathway, water feature, border or flower bed. They are a hardwearing and low maintenance feature, meaning that you can set them in place and not have to think about them again for a long time. Decorative aggregates not only look great, but they can also be an additional element of security as they make a noise when a vehicle or person crosses them.

    • How to lay decorative aggregates

    Clear the area

  • You will need to clear the area where you will be laying the aggregate. Any vegetation and loose material, needs removing. Use weedkiller on any weeds so that your garden remains weed free.

    • Level the ground

  • After you have cleared the area, you will need to level the ground using a rake. This will remove any items such as rocks, twigs, leaves to create a smooth flat, levelled area.

    • Lay a weed control membrane

  • Use a heavy duty membrane that allows water, air and nutrients to pass through to the soil, helping to maintain healthy, fertile ground beneath while suppressing weed growth and reducing garden maintenance.

    • Lay your decorative aggregate of choice

  • You should lay your aggregate of choice to a depth of around 40-50mm for the best coverage, but this may change depending on the side of the decorative aggregate you have chosen.

    What is the difference between a standard bag and a bulk bag?
    A standard bag is approximately 25kg, and a bulk bag is approximately 800kg.
    Which aggregates are best for driveways?
    We have a wide variety of different types of aggregate at Howarth. For example, we have: Crushed stone and manufactured sand, gravel, which can be used for both garden and decorative aggregates, sand, which can be used for roads, and recycled concrete which is often used as a base layer for other construction materials.
    Which aggregates are best for pathways?
    We recommend angular gravel sized between 14mm-20mm for greatest stability as these aggregates interlock under car tyres rather than moving around like pebbles.
    What type of gravel do I need for under concrete slabs?
    We would recommend a Type 1, as it is a subbase used to create a hardcore base for under patios, paving and driveways.
    Can aggregates improve drainage?
    Yes, by creating pockets for water to drain through, preventing water logging and erosion. Whether used in flower beds, as plant toppers or for French drains, aggregates are porous and interlocking, which means that water will not pool on top of the surface.
