Decorative Aggregates

Decorative aggregates are a versatile, simple, and cost-effective way of revitalising or transforming your outdoor space. This may be a patio area, driveway, pathway, water feature, border or flower bed. They are a hardwearing and low maintenance feature, meaning that you can set them in place and not have to think about them again for a long time. Decorative aggregates not only look great, but they can also be an additional element of security as they make a noise when a vehicle or person crosses them.

At Howarth Timber & Building Supplies we offer a wide range of high-quality decorative aggregates to choose from, available in bulk bags for large areas such as driveways, or smaller bags for a top up or small area:

Cobbles and Pebbles
Cobbles and pebbles are naturally rounded stones with a smooth surface and tend to be relatively large size. They are great for water features, rockeries and landscaping projects, and are a popular choice due to their vivid appearance in sunlight, whilst also being bright and shiny when wet.

Stone Chippings and Garden Gravel
Stone chippings and gravel are small sized aggregates often mixed with cement to create a path or driveway. Chippings and gravel are also look great when used loosely to create interesting areas of landscaping projects including borders and pathways.

Slate Chippings
Slate chippings are an ideal choice if you are looking for an aggregate that will have more of an aesthetic impact. They add a stylish element to gardens and outdoor spaces, and have a beautiful sheen when wet.

Each of our aggregate types are available in a variety of colours and hues to compliment every space and style. For more information on decorative aggregates, pop into your local Howarth branch and our friendly teams will be happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much aggregate do I need?
You would usually need a 10mm aggregate at a depth of 30-40mm. On a driveway it would need to be at least 50mm. Ultimately, a larger aggregate will settle and bond together better than smaller ones.
What is a type 1 aggregate?
Type 1 aggregate is an approved granular sub-base material that is created using recycled crushed concrete and rubble. It compacts well to form a solid base, making it a very good option for roads.
What are the different types of aggregate?
We have a wide variety of different types of aggregate at Howarth. For example, we have: Crushed stone and manufactured sand, gravel, which can be used for both garden and decorative aggregates, sand, which can be used for roads, and recycled concrete which is often used as a base layer for other construction materials.
What type of sand do I need to lay slabs?
We would recommend sharp sand to be able to lay slabs, as it is cost-effective and versatile.
What type of gravel do I need for under concrete slabs?
We would recommend a Type 1, as it is a subbase used to create a hardcore base for under patios, paving and driveways.
